Strong Explosion in Thessaloniki: Police Raid at Diavata Prison

A strong explosion occurred in Thessaloniki at 2:10 AM, causing disturbance in the area. The explosion took place on the ground floor of an apartment building on Makedonomachon Street, on the border of the Municipality of Thessaloniki with the Municipality of Neapoli – Sykies.
A high-ranking official of prison staff resided in the apartment building, which led the police to raid Diavata Prison. The specific man is reported to serve as a chief guard at the correctional facility.
Authorities are searching for video footage from security cameras in the area. According to initial estimates, the perpetrator placed three kilograms of explosives in the elevator shaft.
The explosion caused extensive material damage to apartment buildings and parked cars. Two people were slightly injured. Residents of the area reported that the noise was deafening and smelled strongly of gunpowder.
