Guilty of Manslaughter in Egnatia Crash, Acquitted of Dangerous Driving

The Thrace Court of Appeals found a Bulgarian driver guilty of manslaughter in connection with a traffic accident on the Egnatia highway in August 2025 that resulted in the death of three people. The driver was convicted of multiple counts of negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm, receiving a prison sentence of six years and eleven months.
Initially, the driver also faced charges of dangerous driving, which carries stricter penalties. However, the court acquitted him of this charge, in agreement with the prosecutor's proposal, ruling that the conditions for dangerous driving were not met.
According to the defendant's lawyer, Mr. Andreas Tagarakis, the defense argued that the accident was caused by the fault of the driver of another vehicle. The court partially accepted these arguments, acquitting the defendant of the charge of dangerous driving.
The defendant remains in prison, while the case is expected to be heard on appeal.
