Inmate Found Hanged in Athens Police Headquarters

A foreign inmate was found hanged in the holding cells of the Athens Police Headquarters (GADA) on Monday afternoon (September 29, 2025). The inmate had been arrested on September 23 for theft and a detention order had been issued.

According to a statement from the Hellenic Police, the inmate was discovered by the Officer on Duty and the guard hanged with a makeshift noose made from his jacket. Police immediately provided first aid, administering CPR.

Despite resuscitation attempts by the EKAV ambulance crew, the inmate was transported to an on-call hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The competent Prosecutor has been informed of the incident, and all necessary legal and official actions are being taken, as well as a disciplinary investigation.
