Crete: Mafia Ring Busted ā Weapons, Drugs, and Archmandrite Involved

Police in Crete have made 48 arrests after dismantling a criminal network. Authorities possess conversations and photographs showing weapons, including pistols and Kalashnikovs, that the ring members planned to traffic.
The mafia's activities included extortion, assault, drug trafficking, arms dealing, and money laundering. Revenues are estimated at ā¬3 million, with ā¬1 million coming from drug sales.
The preliminary investigation includes a second case file concerning the exploitation of monastic property. According to the investigation, members of the organization blackmailed an archmandrite, whom they recruited. They allegedly asked him for holy relics from Cyprus.
The organization's hierarchy determined the quantities and prices of drugs. The entire Chania region was divided into zones of "responsibility." The ring's activities also extended to extorting businessmen and laundering money.
Those arrested include private citizens, foreigners, two Air Force employees, and a police officer. The organization's total financial gain is estimated to exceed ā¬1.17 million.
