Antiquities Ring Extends to Cyprus: Abbot Arrested for Selling Icons and Gospels

A ring selling ecclesiastical icons and religious books, centered at the Monastery of Mega Spilaio in Kalavryta, Greece, has been dismantled by the Greek police. The abbot of the monastery has been arrested, allegedly preparing to sell, among other items, two Gospels for €200,000.
The investigation began following information about an individual previously involved in antiquities trafficking cases and the abbot of Mega Spilaio. Their meetings took place both inside and outside the Monastery.
According to the police, the "mastermind" of the ring had contacts with auction houses in Germany and Cyprus, which allowed him to export relics and import items into Greece.
The abbot has been removed from his position by the Metropolitan of Aigialeia and Kalavryta, who has assumed his duties. The legal advisor is now also part of the governing council.
