Mexico: Thirteen Arrests in Mayor's Aides Murder Case

Thirteen people have been arrested in Mexico in connection with the murder of two aides to the Mayor of Mexico City, Clara Brugada. The arrests were made during a joint operation by local authorities, the federal police, and the army.
The victims, Ximena Guzmán and José Muñoz, advisors to the mayor, were murdered on May 20 on an avenue in the southern suburbs of the city.
The mayor announced that among those arrested are individuals who directly participated in the attack, as well as those involved in its preparation. Authorities had described the murder as a 'well-planned attack' with 'experienced' perpetrators.
The U.S. government believes this incident demonstrates the influence of drug cartels in Mexico.
In June 2020, Omar Garcia Arfuch, the current Federal Secretary of Public Security, was injured in an attack by members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
