Pakistan: Video Captures 'Honor Killing' - Couple Murdered

A video depicting an 'honor killing' in a remote area of Pakistan has sparked outrage. The video shows a woman and a man, accused of adultery, being murdered.

The woman, Bano Bibi, is seen receiving a copy of the Quran before being shot by her brother, Jalal Satakzai. Subsequently, Ehsan Ullah Samalani, with whom Bano allegedly had a relationship, is also murdered.

The incident took place in the Balochistan province. The Pakistani government has launched an investigation, while politicians, clerics, and human rights organizations have condemned the crime.

Police have arrested 16 people, including a tribal leader and the woman's mother, Gul Jan Bibi, who stated that the killings were carried out based on Baluch traditions.

The video has sparked public outcry, with hashtags such as #justice for the couple going viral. The Council of Pakistani Ulema has labeled the killings as 'un-Islamic'.

Pakistan outlawed honor killings in 2016, but human rights organizations report that the legislation is not fully enforced.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan recorded 405 honor killings in 2024, with most victims being women.
