Peru: Three Miners Dead, Seven Missing After Attack

At least three miners have been killed and seven are missing in northern Peru following an attack on illegal mines, according to a local mayor. The attack occurred on New Year's Eve in the La Libertad region.
The mayor of Pataz, Aldo Mariño, reported that, according to police information, three people were killed at a mine entrance and seven are missing. Other reports suggest the death toll may be higher.
Police have not confirmed the attack, and government officials were unavailable for comment. In May 2025, 13 workers were killed in the same area as criminal organizations attempt to strengthen their control.
