53-Year-Old Arrested in Rethymno for Inciting Crimes Related to Fires

A 53-year-old man was arrested in Rethymno, Crete, accused of inciting citizens to commit crimes, spreading false news, and violating weapons laws, in connection with the recent fires in Greece.
According to the police, the man claimed to be forming teams to locate arsonists, causing concern and discord through social media posts. During his arrest, police found a knife in his possession.
The police announcement states that the arrest was made on August 14, 2025, by officers of the Rethymno Crimes Prosecution and Investigation Sub-Directorate. The preliminary investigation is ongoing.
