Gianniou Death: 1.5 Year Prison Sentence for Chief Sergeant

The Military Court sentenced 50-year-old Chief Sergeant of Commandos, Marinos Ioannou, to 18 months in prison for causing the death of SYOP commando, Panagiotis Gianniou. The decision was unanimous.
According to the court, Ioannou ordered Gianniou to jump into the sea from a helicopter flying at a height of 21-27 meters at a speed of 93-96 km/h, instead of the prescribed 3 meters and 18.5 km/h.
The court took into account Ioannou's clean criminal record and his long service in the National Guard. His personal circumstances, such as his family situation, were also considered.
The court rejected the defense attorney's claim of a "momentary mistake," emphasizing that the order was given without the permission of the helicopter's pilot.
After the sentence was announced, Ioannou encouraged his colleagues to continue performing their duties.
