A court in Thessaloniki has convicted two former deputy mayors in connection with the death of a 65-year-old man and the injury of an 82-year-old man following an attack by stray dogs in March 2020. The two deputy mayors, responsible for the environment in the municipalities of Thessaloniki and Pylaia-Chortiatis, were sentenced to 3 years and 9 months in prison each.

The incidents occurred on March 6, 2020. A 65-year-old man died after an attack, while an 82-year-old man was injured. A few days earlier, another attack had been reported in the same area.

In their defense, the deputy mayors avoided responsibility, while the prosecutor emphasized that positions of responsibility entail obligations. The court acquitted the members of the municipal stray animal management committee.

Both the family of the deceased and the injured man were vindicated in the first instance in the administrative courts.
