Patras Mourns: 33-Year-Old Climber Dies in the Alps
The climbing community of Patras is in mourning after the death of 33-year-old Dimitris Kantas, who lost his life in the French Alps, on Mont Blanc.
The Hellenic Mountaineering Club of Patras (EOS Patras) expressed its sorrow for the loss of Dimitris Kantas, who was a physicist, basketball player, and alpinist.
Reportedly, Dimitris Kantas fell to his death while descending from the Goûter refuge, at an altitude of 3,835 meters. The French newspaper Liberation reports that the climber was carrying a heavy backpack and likely made a technical error.
His body was found by rescuers, while Dimitris Kantas was descending alone and without a rope. Authorities believe the fall was due to a combination of factors, such as fatigue and a heavy backpack.
The Goûter corridor is considered one of the most dangerous points on the route to the summit of Mont Blanc, with more than 100 deaths.
