Turkish Trafficker Escapes Ship near Chios

A Turkish detainee escaped from a passenger ship while sailing between Chios and Oinousses early Saturday morning. The detainee, who was wearing handcuffs, jumped into the sea. He was being escorted by four police officers during his transfer from Korydallos Prison to Mytilene.

The detainee had been arrested on July 7, 2025, by the Lesvos Port Authorities for migrant smuggling. Searches for his location are underway by the Coast Guard. At the same time, disciplinary and criminal investigations are being carried out for the police officers who were escorting him.

According to the announcement by the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the detainee fell into the sea while the ship was in motion. The captain immobilized the ship and search and rescue procedures began immediately.
