Trikala: Farmer with Crypto and Mercedes Under Investigation for Money Laundering

A farmer from a village in the Trikala region is under investigation by the Anti-Money Laundering Authority for allegedly receiving subsidies exceeding €200,000 from OPEKEPE in 2020 and 2021, by presenting misleading information.

According to authorities, the farmer invested the money in photovoltaic systems, purchased land plots, made transfers to investment accounts, bought cryptocurrencies, and placed funds in banking products. Additionally, he rented a bank safe deposit box.

In 2024, he acquired a luxury hybrid Mercedes-Benz vehicle, raising suspicions due to the discrepancy with his declared income. Authorities have frozen the farmer's bank accounts, investment products, safe deposit box, and assets.

Investigations are focused on the money trail and digital trading platforms. The case is not considered isolated, as there are other similar cases under investigation.
