Efforts to extinguish the fire continue for the third day at the destroyed «Violanta» biscuit factory in Trikala, following the deadly explosion that claimed the lives of five female workers.

Firefighters continue to drop water, as the temperature in the rubble remains high. The area remains cordoned off and investigations are ongoing.

According to the Commander of ESKEDIK, Lieutenant General Anastasios Michalopoulos, the explosion was caused by a propane leak. The existence of two above-ground tanks (5,000 and 9,000 liters) was found nearby, with a leak detected in underground pipelines.

During the operation, the bodies of the five missing women were found. Three locals were arrested and charged with manslaughter by negligence, grievous bodily harm, arson and explosion.

On the day of the explosion, 13 people were working at the factory. Eight managed to escape.
