Images from the inauguration of the Athens Metro, which took place on January 29, 2000, have resurfaced online, highlighting an era of optimism and modernization.

The inauguration of the first 14 stations of Lines 2 and 3 (Sepolia – Syntagma and Ethniki Amyna – Syntagma) was attended by the state and political leadership, with then Prime Minister Kostas Simitis emphasizing the importance of the project.

Simultaneously with the ceremony, a large party was held in Syntagma Square. The presentation of the Attiko Metro included various personalities, such as Sakis Rouvas, Giorgos Vardinogiannis, and players from Panathinaikos.

The construction of the metro began in 1992 and was marked by delays due to archaeological finds. The public response was impressive, with approximately one million people visiting the metro on the first day of operation.

Today, the metro is an integral part of daily life in Athens.
