Today, July 1st, the Church commemorates Saints Cosmas and Damian of Rome. Saints Cosmas and Damian are known as the Unmercenaries, due to their selfless practice of medicine.

They originated from Asia and lived during the early Christian centuries. They are considered patrons of physicians and patients, as they healed diseases of body and soul for free, for the glory of God.

The memory of Saints Cosmas and Damian is also celebrated on November 1st (Cosmas and Damian of Asia) and on October 17th (Cosmas and Damian of Arabia).
