Royal Gymnasium of Mieza: Styluses of Aristotle's Students Discovered

The royal gymnasium of Mieza has come to light with the discovery of styluses used by Aristotle's students. Ancient Mieza is the place where Aristotle taught Alexander the Great and other Macedonians.

The research, supervised by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Imathia and Angeliki Kottaridi, included excavation, cleaning, and documentation of the findings. The excavation confirmed that the complex was built in the mid-4th century BC, associating it with Philip II and Alexander the Great.

A new element is the shaping of the space on a gigantic scale, with three huge, horizontal terraces. On the wall with the amphikiones of the covered walkway, as well as on architectural members, white mortars are still preserved, identical to those of the royal tombs in Aigai. The most important finding is four styluses used by Aristotle's students.

Lina Mendoni and the mayor of Naoussa, Nikos Koutsoyannis, signed a relevant programmatic agreement on August 7, 2024.
