Retirement Surge: Reasons and Forecasts

Social security experts predict a surge in retirements for the current year and 2026, due to the expected review of retirement age limits from January 1, 2027, and the new method of calculating pensions.

According to EFKA data, 48,041 new retirement applications were submitted in the first quarter of 2025.

The main reasons for the mass retirement are:

1. The possibility of increasing retirement age limits from 2027.
2. The new favorable regime for working after retirement, which allows pensioners to work without reducing their pension.
3. The retirement of the so-called baby boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1964).

Retirement in 2026 is considered particularly attractive, as the new method of calculating pensions will include the wage change index, leading to larger increases.
