The German-speaking press reports on new records for Greek tourism, highlighting the increase in visitors and the challenges posed by overtourism.

According to the German Press Network (RND), Greece recorded 35.26 million foreign tourists in the first ten months of the year, almost equal to the entire previous year. German tourists are the most numerous nationality, followed by the British, with the number of Germans showing the most dynamic growth rate.

TUI predicts that 2026 will be another record year for Greek tourism, with Germans again playing a key role. However, the problem of overtourism is highlighted, as Greece could receive up to 55 million tourists annually by 2040, with popular destinations such as Mykonos, Santorini, Paros and Rhodes reaching their limits.

Proposals for sustainable tourism development include extending the tourist season and attracting visitors to other destinations, especially in the mainland. Also significant is the increase in tourists from the USA and India, thanks to new air connections. Passenger traffic between the USA and Athens increased by 15% in the first half of 2025, while passengers from India increased by 26.5%.

The Indian airline IndiGo will launch six weekly flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Athens, while Aegean Airlines also plans flights to the two largest cities in India.
