Gr. Nikopoulos: "Tourism Alone Won't Get Us Anywhere"

According to Gr. Nikopoulos, Greece cannot develop by relying solely on tourism. In his article, Nikopoulos argues that the lack of industry, manufacturing, technology, and agricultural production hinders development and the increase in the standard of living.
He mentions that while tourism has increased significantly, with 36 million tourists in 2024, the country's GDP has decreased compared to 2008. Also, investments are fewer, while industrial and agricultural production have decreased.
Nikopoulos emphasizes that many young scientists are forced to work in tourism jobs or leave abroad due to a lack of opportunities in the industry and technology sectors. He proposes strengthening Greek industry, manufacturing, agriculture, and research and technology companies, as well as simplifying licensing procedures for investments.
He points out that the business environment in Greece is difficult, which limits investments in tourism and real estate. In closing, he underlines the importance of developing technology and agriculture for a sustainable development model.
