The Italian newspaper Il Foglio, in an article titled «Lessons from Athens,» refers to the fiscal reality of Greece, praising the strategy of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

According to the article, the Greek economy is on a more positive track than predicted, with public debt decreasing and the government taking measures to support households.

The newspaper reports that in 2025, Greece had set a target surplus of 0.6%, but data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority and Eurostat showed that this figure reached 1.7%. This allowed Kyriakos Mitsotakis to announce economic support measures of 500 million euros without disrupting fiscal balance.

Il Foglio emphasizes that Greece is one of the five European countries with a fiscal surplus and has achieved better-than-expected results in the last four years. GDP is increasing by 2%, and public debt decreased by eight percentage points last year, to 146%. According to the IMF, it is expected to decrease by another eight to nine points this year.

The newspaper recalls Kyriakos Mitsotakis' statement that this result is due to a prudent fiscal policy.
