Construction of Ioannina - Kakavia Highway to Begin

Construction of the new Ioannina-Kakavia highway, essentially an extension of the Ionia Odos, is expected to begin by the end of the year.
The project, with a budget of ā¬310 million, will connect the Ionia Odos and Egnatia Odos, via the city of Ioannina, with Kalpaki and the Zagorochoria villages, reaching Kakavia and the border station between Greece and Albania.
According to statements made to APE-MPE by the Secretary General of Infrastructure, Dimitris Anagnostopoulos, earthworks are expected to begin around the end of 2025, with the entire project estimated to be completed in approximately 4.5 years.
The project is technically challenging due to the mountainous terrain of the region. It includes the construction of the highway from the interchange of Ionia Odos with Egnatia Odos to the Kalpaki interchange, a length of 46.4 km, as well as the upgrade of the Kalpaki-Kakavia section, approximately 23 km long.
The project is funded by the Partnership Agreement for Regional Development (ESPA 2021-2027).
