Tax Office Scrutinizes Thousands of Tax Returns

The Tax Office is scrutinizing thousands of tax return requests, aiming to identify artificial refunds and address newly established businesses that disappear before paying their taxes.
Corporate income tax returns for 2024 exceeded 363,000, of which over 26,000 were credit returns, with a total refund amount of €1.13 billion.
4,200 targeted VAT audits and 1,500 income tax return audits are being activated, based on automated cross-checks from the Taxis, Eispraxis, ELEGXOSlive systems, the POS connection with cash registers, the digital customer list, and the BANCAPP platform.
The AADE has initiated audits on newly established and seasonal businesses that exploit the quarterly VAT return submission.
Under an existing regulation, 92,590 businesses and professionals who started operations from 1/1/2024 to 3/31/2025 are now required to submit a VAT return every month.
From October 1st, voluntary submission to the monthly regime is foreseen for those with an earlier start date.
