Reactions to Wire Fence at Portara After Tourist Incident

The installation of a wire fence around Portara in Naxos has sparked strong reactions following an incident involving a tourist who allegedly lifted an ancient marble. This move has drawn criticism from residents and visitors who believe it aesthetically degrades the monument.
The decision to erect the fence was made after a photo surfaced showing an unidentified man lifting a marble thousands of years old. The Cyclades Antiquities Authority filed a lawsuit against unknown individuals, while its director, Dimitris Athanasoulis, confirmed that there was no damage to the monument itself but spoke of a lack of respect.
Portara, the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo, is one of Naxos's most popular attractions. The installation of the wire fence has provoked reactions, with many suggesting more discreet ways of protection.
This is not the first time that visitor behavior has raised concerns about the protection of monuments in Naxos. Similar incidents have been recorded in the past.
