Athens: Poor Air Quality Due to Fireplaces – Exceeding Limits

Air quality in Athens has deteriorated significantly, with IQAir measurements showing atmospheric pollution levels far exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) limits.
Specialized applications record increased air pollution in areas such as Vrilissia, Psychiko, Chalandri, Piraeus, Kato Patisia, Haidari, Kypseli, and Petralona. Particulate matter PM2.5 reached 60.8 µg/m³, a level considered dangerous.
The burning of wood for heating, especially on very cold days, is considered a significant factor contributing to air pollution. Scientists at the National Observatory of Athens have pointed out the long-term burden on the Athens basin from wood burning.
Recommendations for protecting public health include avoiding outdoor exercise, using an FFP2 mask for travel, and special care for people with respiratory problems.
