Heavy Traffic in Athens as August Vacationers Return

Athens is experiencing heavy traffic as August vacationers and those who left for the Dormition of Mary holiday weekend gradually return.
Traffic is particularly heavy at the Elefsina toll booths towards Athens. Increased traffic is expected in the coming hours.
Traffic police have implemented special measures on highways, including a ban on trucks exceeding 3.5 tons on specific sections of national roads from 16:00 to 23:00.
The restrictions apply to the A8 highway (Athens-Patras), A1 highway (Athens-Thessaloniki-Evzoni), the N. Moudania – Thessaloniki National Road, the A11 highway (Schimatari – Chalkida), the Kavala – Thessaloniki National Road, the A5 highway (Ionia Odos), the A7 highway (Central Peloponnese), the A71 highway (Lefktro-Sparti), the Antirrio – Arta – Ioannina National Road, the Thessaloniki – Poligyros National Road, the A3 highway (Central Greece), and the A52 highway (Aktio road connection to the North – South Axis).
Exemptions apply to vehicles providing roadside assistance, Hellenic Post (ELTA) vehicles, newspaper distribution trucks, and vehicles transporting live animals and perishable goods.
