Municipalities React to Train Station Ticket Office Closures

Nine municipalities from the regions of Sterea Ellada and Thessaly have issued a joint protest resolution against the planned closure of ticket offices at train stations. Following a teleconference on July 25, 2025, the mayors and representatives of the municipalities are calling for the decision to be reversed, the stations to be upgraded, and a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
The Mayor of Levadeia, Dimitris Karamanis, coordinated the meeting, which was attended by the Mayors of Orchomenos, Amfikleia Elateia, Stylida, Farsala, as well as representatives from the Municipalities of Lamia, Karditsa, Trikala, and Volos.
The municipalities expressed their concern about the degradation of rail transport and the historical buildings of OSE, as well as the impact on citizens' access to public transport. They also highlighted the state of neglect in many stations, with closed waiting rooms and inadequate infrastructure.
The municipalities emphasized the importance of a physical staff presence for the safety, information, and functionality of the stations, especially for vulnerable social groups. They are calling for the immediate reversal of the decision, a review of the passenger service policy, the strengthening of station staffing, and the upgrading of infrastructure.
A meeting has already been requested with the Deputy Minister of Transport, Konstantinos Kyranakis, and meetings with members of parliament, regional governors, and organizations will follow.
