The number of drowning deaths in Greece remains alarmingly high. In 2024, 388 deaths were recorded, while in the first half of 2025, deaths reached 91.

According to lifeguard Christos Pazaitis, the reasons for drownings include overestimating one's abilities and consuming food or alcohol before entering the water.

Greece ranks 7th in Europe in sea drowning deaths, according to Eurostat. One in 17 drownings in the EU occurs in Greece.

In 2023, 398 people died from drowning, while in 2024, 388 people lost their lives. The first half of 2025 saw a 23% decrease with 91 deaths.

Nikos Giovanidis, director of the Greek Lifesaving Academy, stated that most victims are Greeks, mainly men and the elderly, followed by young children. Lifeguard coverage is considered inadequate, especially at the beginning of the summer season.
