Exodus of Vacationers: Traffic Congestion in Piraeus

Thousands of citizens are starting their summer vacations, with increased traffic at the port of Piraeus and the KTEL bus stations. Heavy traffic jams were reported on the roads around the port from early in the morning.
Ferry activity is expected to peak this afternoon and weekend, as the first wave of August vacations begins. The most popular destinations are Paros, Santorini and Naxos, but many travelers report that their holidays will be short due to the high cost.
Due to increased traffic, the number of port employees regulating traffic has been increased. Today, 19 routes depart from Piraeus to the Cyclades, Dodecanese and Crete.
There is also increased traffic at the KTEL bus stations for trips to the mainland, with traffic problems on Athens – Corinth Avenue and Athens Avenue. Traffic Police expects the situation to worsen and has taken emergency measures on national roads.
