Share on:

An alert has been issued for the beaches of Chalkida in Evia, as dozens of purple jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca) have appeared on the shores of Kourenti and Papathanasiou beach. The appearance of this species is more frequent during the summer months due to rising water temperatures and climate change.

Experts recommend avoiding contact with the jellyfish and immediately informing the authorities in case of a large concentration. A sting can cause pain, irritation, and allergic reactions.

Symptoms of a sting:

  • Burning pain
  • Intense redness
  • Appearance of the jellyfish's imprint on the skin
  • Nausea
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Tachycardia
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Dyspnea

Instructions in case of a sting:

  • Carefully remove the tentacles (not with bare hands).
  • Rinse with plenty of seawater.
  • Apply ice or cold compresses.
  • If symptoms are severe, visit a hospital or health center.
