Heraklion: Retired Man Cleans His Neighborhood Daily

Kostas Digenis, a resident of Nea Alikarnassos in Heraklion, has dedicated the last 20 years to cleaning his neighborhood. Despite health problems he faced after a workplace accident, he started cleaning the streets and areas around the garbage bins, noticing indifference from his fellow citizens.

Speaking to APE-MPE, Mr. Digenis expressed his disappointment with the increase in household waste and inadequate recycling. At the same time, he sorts waste and removes bulky items, trying to raise awareness among those around him. He is particularly pleased with the positive response from children.

Mr. Digenis emphasizes the need for active citizen participation in caring for their neighborhood, as well as the responsibility of the state to effectively address everyday issues.
