Foot-and-mouth disease case detected in Lesvos – Emergency measures

A case of foot-and-mouth disease has been detected in a cattle unit in the Pelopi area of northeastern Lesvos.

An emergency meeting was immediately held under Anastasia Antonelli, Deputy Regional Governor of Primary Sector. From today, strict measures are in force prohibiting the movement of animals (cattle, sheep, goats and pigs) and their products outside the island.

Extensive checks are starting on all livestock in Lesvos, estimated at approximately 150,000 animals. Veterinary teams will carry out sampling in livestock units throughout the island to determine if there are any other cases.
