Larissa: Significant Drop in Pinios River Level Due to Drought and Heatwave
Share on:

Drought and a heatwave have led to a significant drop in the water level of the Pinios River in the Larissa region. Farmers are seeing land go unwatered due to the lack of water.

According to Eurokinissi news agency, the Pinios riverbed shows signs of desertification in the regions of Larissa and Trikala. Thessaly is facing one of the most difficult irrigation periods in recent years, with a dramatic lack of available water.

86% of total water consumption in Greece is for irrigation, with 25% concerning Thessaly. Limited snowfall and rainfall after the 2023 floods have brought water resources to a critical point, as seen in the level at the dam near DEYAL.
