Mati: Seven Years Since the Deadly 2018 Fire

Seven years have passed since the fire in Mati on July 23, 2018, a tragedy that claimed the lives of 104 people. The fire started in the Daou Pentelis area and spread rapidly due to extreme weather conditions and inadequate crisis management.
Survivor testimonies describe scenes of chaos and despair. Many people were trapped in their homes, cars, or tried to escape to the sea. Rescue efforts were inadequate, and many lost their lives waiting for help.
The justice system has assigned responsibility to officials of the Fire Department and Civil Protection. According to the Court of Appeal's decision in June 2025, they were convicted for their actions and omissions.
The tragedy in Mati highlighted the weaknesses in dealing with fires and the need for better coordination and preparation.
