Naxos: Reactions to Tourist Photographing with Marble at Portara
Share on:

A tourist's photo showing him lifting a piece of marble at Portara, an archaeological site with over 2,500 years of history, has sparked strong reactions in Naxos.

The photo, circulating on social media, shows the tourist holding the marble as if it were a simple object, showing no respect for the historical significance of the monument.

Cyclades24.gr reports that this incident is not isolated, as Portara does not have permanent security, resulting in vandalism and interventions by tourists.

The residents of Naxos are asking the Ministry of Culture, the Cyclades Antiquities Inspectorate, the South Aegean Region, and the Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades to take measures to protect the site, such as the placement of a guard, especially during the summer months.

Residents emphasize the need to protect cultural heritage, stating that such monuments cannot be left exposed to ignorance and indifference.
