Patras-Pyrgos Highway Completed: A Bloody Road Reaches Its End

After a long and eventful journey, the new Patras-Pyrgos national road has been opened to traffic. The project, which began in 2007, was marked by economic crises, political entanglements, and legal disputes, but was finally completed.
The road's history is full of twists and turns. It was included and excluded from the Elefsina-Tsakona road axis concession, while in 2015 the SYRIZA-ANEL government decided to divide it into eight contracts, despite reservations from the European Commission. Only five of these contracts were signed, while the rest were either canceled due to the contractor Christos Kalogritsas' inability to provide a guarantee letter, or became entangled in legal disputes.
The Mitsotakis government in 2019 undertook to close the open fronts, dissolving contracts and including the project in the Olympia Odos concession. On August 1, 2025, the entire new route, with a total length of 65 kilometers, was opened to traffic, significantly reducing the Patras-Pyrgos travel time.
Infrastructure Minister Christos Dimas stressed that the new road meets modern safety standards, while road safety interventions had already begun on the old road in 2023, reducing accidents.
