Patras: Touching Story of 14-Year-Old Who Hugged Doctors

A touching story has emerged from Patras involving a 14-year-old from Kefalonia who, after being extubated at the university hospital in Rio, hugged the doctors and nurses who cared for her. According to Andreas Iliadis, director of the Pediatric ICU, the young patient had contracted an enterovirus that caused paralysis.
The 14-year-old was hospitalized for 10 days and extubated on August 15th. According to protothema.gr, the enterovirus caused inflammation of the central nervous system, leading to acute idiopathic polyneuritis, a rare syndrome that causes reversible paralysis.
The 14-year-old's health deteriorated on August 4th, when she was transported by helicopter from Kefalonia to Araxos and from there to Karamanthaneio and then to the University General Hospital of Patras.
