Ship grounding in Nea Styra: Investigation into causes and reactions

Authorities are investigating the causes of a passenger ship grounding off Nea Styra, examining scenarios of human error or mechanical failure. A special team is preparing a disengagement plan, while two tugs, a pollution control vessel and a patrol boat are at the scene.
The ship has 10-15 meter tears, but not a single continuous rupture. According to experienced captain Sideris Mamidis, arresting the captain before disengagement is contrary to nautical art.
The captain claims rudder damage, while passengers complained of insufficient information. Other testimonies highlight the crew's readiness. The ship remains stranded and the captain faces prosecution for violating navigation safety, obstructing traffic and causing a shipwreck.
The Ministry of Shipping announced that the captain did not immediately report the grounding and the company did not submit a disengagement plan. SYRIZA PS raised questions about the safety and inspection of the ship.
The incident happened on the afternoon of August 5, with the successful transfer of all passengers to Nea Styra.
