Anthrax Outbreak in Cattle Triggers Alert in Trifylia, Greece

An alert has been raised among livestock farmers in Messinia, Greece, following the detection of anthrax cases in cattle in mountainous Trifylia. So far, 30 cows and 2 sheep have died.
The bacterium Bacillus anthracis was found in farms in the Raptopoulou and Lykoudesiou areas. Anthrax is a disease that must be reported, and any suspicion should be immediately reported to veterinary services.
A meeting was held in the Municipal Community of Raptopoulou with the participation of the Deputy Regional Governor of PE Messinia, Stathis Anastasopoulos, and the Deputy Regional Governor of Agricultural Development and Veterinary Medicine, Spyros Zacharias, as well as executives of EODY and representatives of the Forestry Department. Measures to isolate the bacterium and prevent the spread of infection were discussed.
In case of confirmation of a case, measures such as burning carcasses, vaccinating animals, and disinfecting vehicles and equipment are applied.
