Anna Psarouda-Benaki, a lawyer and politician who was the first woman to serve as Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament and President of the Academy of Athens, has passed away at the age of 92.

Anna Psarouda-Benaki was born in Athens on December 12, 1934. She studied law at the University of Athens and continued her studies in Criminal Law in Germany.

She was elected Member of Parliament with New Democracy in 1981 and served as Minister of Education, Culture and Justice. In 2004, she was elected Speaker of the Parliament, a position she held until 2007.

Nikitas Kaklamanis and Kostis Hatzidakis expressed their condolences for her loss.
