The Sorbonne Paris Nord University withdrew its application to establish a branch in Greece, questioning the criteria for private universities. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had presented the Sorbonne as an example of quality for private universities.

The government is accused of undermining public universities and promoting private colleges, with the aim of creating a market for private degrees. While the government believes that the establishment of private branches is irreversible, students and academics may resist.
