Volunteer Military Service for Women: Reactions and Opinions

The recent decision by the Ministry of Defense, allowing 100 Greek women aged 20-26 to volunteer for 12 months in the Hellenic Army, has sparked various reactions. Their training will begin in Lamia in June 2026.

Speaking to Orange Press Agency, Alexandra stated that she had already sent an email expressing her interest, considering military service her duty as a Greek citizen. She also expressed concerns about potential involvement in military operations outside of Greece.

Konstantina views voluntary military service as a challenge for self-discovery and an opportunity to test her resilience in a male-dominated environment. However, she does not hide her hesitations, especially given the current geopolitical situation.

Maria, on the other hand, welcomes the choice given to women, although she is not personally interested in pursuing this path. However, she would consider training in martial arts for self-protection reasons.

Interested parties can apply until March 31, 2026, electronically, at [email protected]. The basic requirements are age 20-26, physical fitness category I/1 or I/2, and a clean criminal record. If applications exceed 100, priority will be given based on the order of submission.
