AI Companies Invest in Lobbying for Political Influence

Artificial intelligence (AI) companies are increasing their lobbying efforts in Washington, seeking to shape American policy. According to a Financial Times analysis, over 500 organizations lobbied the White House and Congress on AI in the first half of the year, nearly doubling efforts since 2023.
OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, increased its lobbying spending to $1.8 million in the first half of 2025, up from $380,000 in 2023. Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta have also supported initiatives to boost their AI efforts.
Companies are seeking government support for building data centers and new energy sources. They argue that AI could add trillions of dollars to the US GDP and warn of the risk of the US falling behind China in AI development.
Additionally, tech companies are seeking relief from antitrust cases and copyright infringement lawsuits.
