Post-Junta Era: An Open Rift in Greek Society

The 51st anniversary of the restoration of democracy in Greece brings back discussions about the legacy of the Post-Junta era (Metapolitefsi). While many present it as a period of stability, there is criticism regarding its alleged negative influence, such as populism and the rejection of discipline.
The Metapolitefsi was characterized by the active participation of the masses and the claiming of social and political rights. Demands for social redistribution, the creation of a welfare state, and the modernization of society were brought to the forefront. Despite the achievements, many of these demands are demonized today.
The current government has taken measures that negate achievements of the Metapolitefsi, such as the abolition of university asylum and the restriction of demonstrations. Despite efforts to cancel the expectations of the Metapolitefsi, the rift between popular demands and political reality remains open.
The question for the future is when will there be new social explosions.
