New Flood Prevention Tools in "Active Battle" Bill
Share on:

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection's "Active Battle" bill introduces new tools for flood prevention, similar to those that recently affected Attica. The bill includes the establishment of a Flood Risk Assessment Subcommittee and the creation of an Operational Meteorology Unit (Unit7–METEO) at the National Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management (E.S.K.E.D.I.K.).

The Flood Risk Assessment Subcommittee will consist of specialized scientists, such as hydrologists, who will continuously assess and evaluate flood risk. Unit7–METEO will provide specialized meteorological analyses and forecasts on a 24-hour basis.

Special emphasis will be placed on mandatory local special flood risk prevention plans to be drawn up by municipalities and regions. The bill provides for a transition period and support from the central government for the implementation of the new plans.

Special provision is made for small island and mountainous municipalities, which often lack sufficient resources. In this context, targeted actions are planned to support the preparation and implementation of Special Flood Risk Prevention Plans.
