New "Evrytos" Plan for Athens Water Supply

A new plan called "Evrytos" is underway to secure the water supply of Attica for the next 30 years. The project, budgeted at 535 million euros, aims to divert the Karpenissiotis and Krikeliotis rivers towards the Evinos dam.
According to the plan, water will be transported to Athens through two parallel 20-kilometer tunnels, utilizing gravity, without the need for pumps and energy costs. Construction is expected to be completed in four years.
EYDAP has declared Athens in a state of "red alert" due to the reduction of water reserves in the reservoirs. In parallel with the "Evrytos" plan, EYDAP is also promoting other interventions, such as the operation of boreholes and the utilization of the underground reserves of the Boeotian Kifissos.
In the event that rainfall is limited, EYDAP plans to install desalination units. In addition, the unification of municipal water companies under the umbrella of EYDAP is being promoted.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy is also considering the revaluation of water tariffs.
