ND Rejects Investigative Committee on OPEKEPE Case
Share on:

New Democracy (ND) rejected the proposal for the establishment of a Preliminary Investigation Committee regarding the OPEKEPE case in Parliament. The vote took place after intense debates and the opposition's withdrawal.

ND chose a 'hybrid' method, with some MPs voting and others abstaining, in order to avoid invalidating the procedure. PASOK requested a postponement of the vote, but the request was rejected.

Makis Voridis and Lefteris Avgenakis, who are involved in the case, defended their positions. Mr. Voridis argued that there is no explicit description of an offense, while Mr. Avgenakis attacked the former governor of OPEKEPE and PASOK.

ND favors the establishment of an Examination Committee for an in-depth investigation of OPEKEPE's actions. The opposition accuses ND of seeking to statute-bar any offenses in this way.

The discussion on the establishment of an Examination Committee is postponed to September.
