PASOK on Mati Tragedy: We Must Not Let History Repeat Itself

PASOK-KINAL issued a statement on the anniversary of the Mati tragedy, emphasizing that "the time for silence is over." They highlight the need for justice and political will, as well as the importance of prevention to avoid a repeat of such a tragedy.
Andreas Poulas, Member of Parliament for Argolida and head of the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection sector of PASOK-KINAL, stated that seven years have passed since the tragedy, where 104 people lost their lives. He described the fire as the second deadliest of the 21st century worldwide and the largest within an urban area in Europe.
Mr. Poulas stressed that the recent court decision is a first step towards justice, but the feeling of impunity remains. He also emphasized the need for a strong and comprehensive system of prevention, warning, and immediate response in Civil Protection.
PASOK-KINAL calls for immediate decisions to strengthen the Fire Service, utilize scientific knowledge, and raise public awareness.
