Chryssohoidis: 1,500 Arrests in Greek Mafia Crackdown, Focus on Phone Scams

Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chryssohoidis announced that 1,500 members of the so-called Greek Mafia have been arrested. Authorities are focusing on combating phone scams, aiming to dismantle criminal groups.
Mr. Chryssohoidis also referred to legislative regulations regarding gun ownership, stressing the need to eradicate criminal perceptions. Special services are being created to control the trafficking of weapons and ammunition, with an emphasis on inaccessible areas such as Psiloritis.
Regarding phone scams, the minister noted that they originate from specific groups, such as the Roma, and that the police have targeted criminal organizations, such as the one in Zevgolatio, Corinth.
Referring to operations against the Greek Mafia, Mr. Chryssohoidis stressed that the accused create problems for the country's economy and image. In addition, he referred to policing in areas with Roma populations, with the implementation of measures in Western Attica.
